A Southern gambler hunts a killer in the thick of the first great battle of the Civil War
It’s July 1861, and both the Union and Confederate armies expect to win the war within 24 hours. For Harrison Raines, a southern dandy ensconced in DC society, it’s time to choose a side. Though Raines loves Virginia, he hates slavery with a passion. And joining either army would mean leaving Washington and deserting the beautiful Caitlin Howard, a British actress whose heart, sadly, lies with the eccentric thespian John Wilkes Booth. For Caitlin’s sake, Raines attempts to remain neutral in a time when neutrality means death.
On the morning of the battle, Raines escorts Caitlin to watch the carnage firsthand. When the First Battle of Bull Run turns into a rout, he sees 1 major fighting to rally his troops—a major who is later found dead far behind Union lines, branded a deserter. To clear the dead man’s reputation, Raines must solve a murder as bullets continue to fly.

A story of crime covered up by a battle. When an officer is found murdered after the Battle of Manassas,Harrison Raines is commissioned to investigate. Raines, a part-time Pinkerton agent, is involved in a hunt for an assassin. It brings him to the society of Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia. Who killed this officer and why?Throw in a beautiful actress named Caitlin Howard who is in love with John Wilkes Booth, the love triangle pulls Harrison toward a dark secret. I loved the descriptions of the city of Washington, D.C. and its residents, the colorful rich, the politicians, the pathetically poor, the criminally disposed. Good mystery.Product details

Murder at Manassas The Harrison Raines Civil War Mysteries Book 1 edition by Michael Kilian Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This is a very intriguing novel. Captivating and with a plot that twist and turns keeping the reader interested. A good read.
We immediately bought the sequel! Harrison Raines is the perfect anti-hero who bumbles himself into trouble and solves mysteries on the way. Just enough intrigue, romance, mystery and history to please everyone.
This is a great blend of fact and fiction. The description of Washington D.C. was almost repulsive it was so real. The characters are likeable and human.
I found the main character, Harrison, very believable. Th story and the setting familiar. Over all , at he end, I found myself wanting to read the other books in thee series.
Great read.
An entertaining read about the murder of a Union officer during the first balltle of Bull Run (or Manassas, depending on your POV). Fairly accurate in terms of historical content. Some of the characters/events are fictional, which the author details at the end. This wasn't problem for me.
When I started the book, I had trouble staying interested. It could be that I had a lot of distractions in my life at the time. But I persisted and was rewarded by a good read. The pace picked up and I was hooked halfway into the book. The historical background is accurate (important to me) and the characters well developed. I'm still not sure who killed the Major and neither is the protagonist, Harry, but I can't wait to see what his next adventure is.
